I do believe you've made the grass purple because grass just cannot be green everywhere in the universe. Is there not a saying, as sure as the grass is green and the sky is blue. Well, lets make it less certain! Shall we? Well, it fits more that way and makes it clear it's not Earth that he is on.
And as for purple? Purple is not as common a colour for plants. Sure you find some plants, but red is more common, as well as yellow, perhaps blue would have been even stranger but could loose the contrast with the Tardis as well as possibly suggesting the picture has been drawn as a night scene. Well, you know why you picked that colour of course, but here are my few guesses!
